Many of you are just hearing this news and are wondering how we got here. Let me explain...
In January 2008 Grant was limping. We thought he hurt his ankle and took him to the pediatrician where it was excused as a sprain. A few weeks later, I wasn't satisfied and we went to the Hughston Clinic. Dr. Fernicola did X rays and saw nothing. He also said that when a child learns to walk differently due to a minor injury, they forget how to walk normal for awhile and that explained his goofy gait.
In about May or June he started to complain that his back hurt. It was always very convenient when it was time to clean up or do something he didn't want to do. So at first we didn't worry. Then it kept on. We went to Dr. Hudson 22 days ago. He looked at it and asked questions. Then he rubbed it a bit and Grant said it felt better. Dr. Hudson told him to tell me if it still hurt and I'd bring him in for 2 shots to make it better (no shots exist, he just wanted to know he was not faking). Every time he complained thereafter I'd ask if he wanted to go back, he answered no until 12 days ago. He said to me that his back hurt (we were camping and he was having a great time) and he was ready to go get the shots. Then we were more concerned.
On Wednesday, July 23 we went to swim after Wednesday Night Supper. I know that God put us there for this moment in time. He started walking really contorted. But yet he was swimming and having a great time. If it weren't for all my friends there, I think I would have asked him why he was walking weird and written it off to being cold or whatever. But because they were persistent, I think I was more alarmed than I would have been. But then again, when we got home, Chad instantly freaked out when he saw him walk. So maybe I wouldn't have been so nonchalant.
Thursday morning we went to Dr. Hudson and he sent us immediately to X rays at the Medical Center. He sent us with very clear instructions that he was concerned and not to leave the Medical Center without getting the report directly from the Radiologist and that we were to ONLY go to Scottish Rite for treatment (he was leaving town and we would be dealing with the on call pediatrician, Dr. Basilio).
We had the X rays. Then they told us that we needed to come back for a CT scan after lunch. We were now more than a little worried. But still we were thinking slipped disk, maybe surgery, but certainly not cancer.
We met with Dr. Morgan the radiologist at the Medical Center after the CT scan where he told us it could be a cancer or Histiocytosis. That is where we broke. We went to Dr. Basilio for her to just send us back for blood work to tell if it was Leukemia. After 2 horrible hours, we learned it wasn't and were leaning toward Histio. We knew nothing of the other cancers it could be until we went to Scottish Rite on Monday.
We spent a very long scary weekend waiting to go to Scottish Rite. Mom and Dad came down and we tried to go camping but it was too treacherous for the little toothpick back. So we came home after he'd fallen a few times and we just couldn't handle it.
Sunday night we had a time of prayer at church that was so moving. We were so touched by the outpouring of love and concern for our baby. We truly were propped up and ready to go hear what we did on Monday.
Monday's report and the others are below...
